Sony Pictures Television Announces Third Annual Diverse Directors Program

Culver City, Calif. (June 17, 2016) – Sony Pictures Television (SPT) announced the launch of its 2016 Diverse Directors Program. The annual initiative, which is in its third year, is part of SPT’s commitment to providing opportunities to talented artists of diverse backgrounds.

Diverse Directors Program finalists will have the opportunity to work closely with established television directors on episodes of various hour and half-hour scripted SPT series.

“By providing diverse talent access to the mainstream creative process, the Diverse Directors Program offers an invaluable training ground for participating directors,” said Kim Rozenfeld, executive vice president, U.S. scripted programming for SPT. “We look forward to adding talent unique in voice and fresh in perspective to our series and providing promising directors creative enrichment.”

There will be 15 semi-finalists, selected from the estimated 400 applicants, who will participate in the Diverse Directors Program’s intensive episodic directing workshop consisting of six evenings of discussion and instruction from working directors, production personnel and entertainment professionals. Approximately five finalists will then be chosen and invited to shadow television directors on various SPT series. Last year’s program finalists worked on SPT series including “Dr. Ken,” “Night Shift,” “Powers,” “The Goldbergs,” “The Get Down” and “The Blacklist.”

Paul Martin, senior vice president and chief diversity officer for Sony Pictures Entertainment said, “We are proud to be entering the third year of this impactful program which underscores Sony Pictures’ efforts to create a diverse workforce, and promotes the benefits of an inclusive creative community. The program also provides Sony Pictures Television with a pipeline of behind the camera talent that reflects the diverse and global nature of its audience.”
